As usual for a holiday I was at my parents house for Easter. And for the first time that I have this blog we went shopping on a Saturday AND the weather was not too nasty AND I had the time to go for a little walk so I finally can show you some, when not very spring like then at least not too bad pictures of my hometown.
If you would ask me if Darmstadt is a nice city without thinking I would rather say no. But actually it is. There are quite a few beautiful spots and I guess it must have been outragiously beautiful before the 11th of September 1944, when an air raid caused a fire storm that destroyed three quarters of Darmstadt. What was destroyed was rebuild in the ugliest forms of post war architecture you can imagine, which, at first sight, can make Darmstadt really ugly. But of course I’m only showing you the nice parts. Saturday was just so amazing. Not only did Vienna prove to be as beautiful as we had figured it would be on Friday, it was also t-shirt weather: just so warm!
We started with a lovely breakfast at Neni’s at the Naschmarkt. The Naschmarkt is a big market that streches for at least 500m between the streets “Linke Wienzeile” and “Rechte Wienzeile” and has not only market stands where you can get vegetables and fruits (from the normal stuff to very exotic fruits that other than in Thailand I have never seen before) but also many small restaurants. Our breakfast e.g. included not only nice views of the market but also scrambled eggs, fresh cream cheese and homemade bread and also some tea and (we thought we deserved this) a glass of champagne. I arrived in Vienna yesterday morning at 7.40 a.m. Somehow I hadn’t thought about what that meant for getting up though: my alarm rang at 3.45 a.m. Yet on the other hand I had the whole day in Vienna.
Arriving at the hostel, Wombats at the Naschmarkt, which by the way is really new, good and very centrally located, I couldn’t check-in yet but drop off my luggage so after a quick look in the map I made my way to the the Museums Quartier. The area with the signature seats all over the place was so nice and sunny, I decided to stop there for breakfast. Continue reading
Another “Where I’ve been” is Antwerp in Belgium, a city I visited in March 2010. Back than a friend of mine and me, we decided to take a week off, take my car and just drive through Belgium, visiting interesting cities and friends on the way. The itenary was Düsseldorf, Antwerp, Brugges, Ghent, Brussels, Paris and back home: over 1000km of driving. Continue reading
To be honest, when I go home to see my parents, I usually don’t care much about the town. We might go to the city for some shopping but that’s usually about it. When I still lived there I even thought that Darmstadt was an ugly and boring town. The only time I go sightseeing is when I have friends from abroad/out of town over. But actually Darmstadt has a lot to offer. Continue reading
