It is time to start a new series. Over the next few weeks up till christmas, I will try to go and see some christmas markets in die Rhine region and I will present them to you here in the blog.
And as this is where I live, I will present to you the christmas market in Dusseldorf first. Well. actually Dusseldorf doesn’t only have one christmas market but many. Except from the fact that many suburbs and quarters have their own small christmas market, in Dusseldorfs city center you also find a christmas market on every square where you can sip delicious mulled wine.
- There is a christmas market on Marktplatz, the market square at the feet of the statue of mounted Jan Wellem – Düsseldorf’s landmark. Have a mulled wine at a small guerrilla store in the entrance to a souvenir and christmas assessoire shop (and no, I’m not only advertising this place because my boyfriend is one of the “founders” of this stall, the mulled wine is actually really, really good).
- The“Engelchenmarkt”, the market of angels is a cute little market on Heinrich-Heine-Platz, where the main public transport station to get into the old city is. In the music pavilion, actually an art nouveau masterpiece, is a place selling the obligatory mulled wine and playing music.
The christmas market on Flinger Straße is connecting the Engelchenmarkt with the market on the Marktplatz. The huts here are modelled on Düsseldorf’s old town houses.
- One of my favourites is the “Sternchenmarkt“, idyllically located in the courtyard of Wilhelm-Marx-Haus. It is cute and as it is located in a courtyard somehow limited you get a very specially atmosphere.
To find all those different places and more, have a look at Dusseldorf Tourist Board’s website. They show you where everything is located here.
